The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Dallas Police Chief David Brown will brief a city council committee this morning on the city’s crime numbers.
The update will reveal if the department’s efforts to combat a dramatic increase in violent crime has been successful. Since last year, aggravated assaults have risen by 35 percent. Murders are up about 85 percent.
Brown attributed the crime increase to a shortage of police officers, but his plan to move officers to other shifts received pushback. Governor Greg Abbott’s office offered state resources to help the department combat crime.
