From The Newsroom: Texas To Take On Human Trafficking; Oscar Nominations And Snubs

The top local stories this morning from the KERA Newsroom: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today will announce the state's new human trafficking unit. Prosecutor Kirsta Melton will lead the unit.

The National Human Trafficking Resource Center says 330 cases of human trafficking were reported in Texas last year. The Department of Public Safety has identified human trafficking as an area cartels and gangs are moving into.

Other stories this morning:

  • No Texans won the $1.6 billion jackpot in last night’s Powerball. Winning tickets were sold in suburban Los Angeles, Tennessee and Florida. But Texas didn’t lose completely. Two North Texans had five of the six winning numbers, which means they take home a million dollars.
  • The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards are out. Our Big Screen team discusses some of the contenders, and find that there’s again, a lack of diversity in the nominees.
