The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

Dallas is a step closer to getting a new police chief. The city today released a list of eight candidates, including three insiders and a police chief from North Texas. Candidates will be interviewed in Dallas starting July 10. Dallas has been without a permanent chief since David Brown retired from the force last fall.

Other stories this evening:

  • Four new members joined the Dallas City Council this week, and the council met today. One of the first items they discussed was the city budget. New council member Kevin Felder represents parts of South Dallas. Felder says he wants the city to spend more money on funding for home repairs.

  • Susan Burton became addicted to drugs after her 5-year-old son was killed in a car accident. After spending nearly two decades in and out of prison for drug offenses, she got clean by finding a treatment facility on her own. She now operates a non-profit organization that helps other women rebuild their lives after prison, and today on Think, she talked with Krys Boyd.

  • North Texas is filled with taquerias and Tex-Mex restaurants, but there aren’t many places that focus on Mexican fine dining. In Dallas, Revolver Taco Lounge in Deep Ellum is changing that with its new dinner concept. As Gus Contrerasreports, it’s bucking the trend that good Mexican food has to be cheap.
