The top local stories this morning from the KERA Newsroom:
Texas had mixed results in this year’s Nation’s Report Card. The National Center for Education Statistics releases the report every two years, which measures the reading and math skills of fourth and eighth grade students around the country.
Math scores generally dropped for Texas eighth graders, but still remain above the national average. Fourth graders fared better though, scoring four points higher than the national average.
Fourth grade reading scores remained stable while the scores of eight-graders went down.
DeEtta Culbertson with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) says the state is planning to implement math and reading academies to help train teachers in these areas, and says that should help improve future scores.
