Dewhurst: 'Obama Ought To Be Impeached'

The Texas Tribune
Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst speaks at The Texas Tribune Festival on Sept. 28.

Five stories that have North Texas talking: Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst calls for President Obama’s impeachment, closing arguments in Mark Cuban’s insider-trading case, an early flu death and more.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst called for President Obama’s impeachment at a Tea Party meeting in Tarrant County yesterday, the Texas Observer reports. “This election is about protecting you and your freedoms, which are given to you by God, but which are being trampled on by Barack Obama right now. I don’t know about you, but Barack Obama ought to be impeached,” Dewhurst told supporters. “Not only for trampling on our liberties, but what he did in Benghazi is just a crime.” Dewhurst is running for re-election next year, after being knocked out of last year's U.S. Senate race by Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz. And Monday night brought more excitement later in the evening. Texas Observer reporter Christopher Hooks later tweeted

  • Mark Cuban Case Winds Down: Closing arguments are expected today in the insider-trading case against Dallas Mavericks owner and billionaire Mark Cuban. Cuban is accused of using insider information to sell his stake in a Canadian search engine company to avoid $750,000 in losses. Cuban asserts that the information he was given was not made confidential. KERA’s BJ Austin will have more on this story later today.

  • Dallas County Reports Early Flu Death: Dallas County officials reported its first adult flu-related death of the season. The Dallas Morning News reports that the case is unusual because flu-related deaths of adults are not required to be reported to public health departments.  Zachary Thompson, director of the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department, encourages everyone to get a flu shot while the supply is plentiful. Since the government shutdown, the CDC’s flu tracker has not been updated, but Google has been tracking flu trends.

  • JFK Goes To The Opera: The Fort Worth Opera will commission an opera on the late President John F. Kennedy. "JFK" is the working title, and the production is slated to premiere in the Opera’s 70th anniversary season in 2016. This will be the company’s third commissioned opera, and it will focus on the president’s time in Fort Worth the morning before his trip to Dallas. The world premiere production of "JFK" is set for Bass Performance Hall on April 16, 2016.

  • It’s A Movie! It’s A TV Show! It’s A Documentary!: Superheroes are everywhere these days, from movies to television shows (i.e. "Marvel’s Agents of Shield") and now, a PBS documentary. “Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle” explores the history and legacy of superheroes. It’ll premiere tonight on KERA TV at 7 p.m. and features appearances from Stan Lee, Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the 1970s; Joe Simon, co-creator of Captain America and more. Liev Schreiber, who portrays Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, narrates. In the meantime, check out this trailer to whet your superhero appetite.
