Five stories that have North Texas talking: Expect a soggy day or two, you could soon be able to drink a beer at your favorite college football or basketball game, some State Fair of Texas vendors got busted for selling alcohol to someone who was too young, and more:
Have the umbrella handy. It’s going to be a soggy morning and a soggy day. Rain started falling overnight and more rain is expected to move slowly throughout the area Monday. Expect up to 2.5 inches of rain in parts of North Texas through 7 p.m. Those north and west of Dallas-Fort Worth should expect the most rain. A cold front rolls through North Texas Tuesday morning, which will bring in more rain. Chances for rain continue into Wednesday. Over the weekend, Mother Nature dumped a foot of rain over parts of Central Texas. Rain forced the Austin City Limits Music Festival to cancel Sunday’s events, KUT Radio reports. Check the North Texas forecast from the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office.
- Some colleges hope to sell booze at games: You might be able to grab a brewski while watching area college football or basketball games. SMU, the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Austin are among colleges looking to lift bans on alcohol sales in the stands at football and basketball games. The Dallas Morning News reports that those colleges say alcohol sales could boost attendance and raise more money. But other Texas schools, including TCU, Baylor and Texas A&M, aren’t interested. SMU has obtained local and state permits, and only needs approval from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. In 2010, University Park voters approved alcohol sales within city limits. Beer sales could begin as early as January at SMU’s Moody Coliseum, The News reports.
- Speaking of booze: Seven vendors at the State Fair of Texas were busted for selling beer or wine to an underage decoy. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission conducted its annual sting on Friday night, using a 16-year-old girl as the decoy, KXAS-TV (Channel 5) reported. The vendors were unable to sell beer and wine for two days. But several other vendors contacted police after the girl approached them for alcohol. The State Fair ends Sunday. - Let's talk about Fitzgerald: Dr. Elliot Engel will discuss how “F. Scott Fitzgerald's creative genius, lavish and ill-fated marriage to wife Zelda and literary works are linked to the modern day view of the Roaring Twenties.” The free event is happening at 7 p.m. at the National Scouting Museum, 1329 W. Walnut Hill Lane in Irving. Show up as early as 5 p.m. for tours of the museum. The event is part of Irving’s Big Read program, which features Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.”
- A classical trio kind of Monday: ArtMusic presents "The Art of the Trio" featuring works by Haydn, Shostakovich, and Beethoven performed by Aleksandr Snytkin, Gayane Manasjan Fullford and Heng-Jin Park. It’s the first concert of the third season for ArtMusic, which presents classical concerts that feature small ensembles. It’s at 7:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration at 14115 Hillcrest Rd. in Dallas – and it’s free.
