Dallas, TX – A compromise is being offered in the battle over naming a downtown Dallas street for Cesar Chavez. Council member Mitchell Rasansky has sent a memo to his colleagues suggesting that the Dallas Farmers Market be named Cesar Chavez Farmers Market.

Alberto Ruiz, with the Cesar Chavez Boulevard Task Force, says it's a nice thought, but it will not replace the push to rename Industrial or Ross Avenue for the migrant farm workers' hero.

Ruiz: If Mr. Rasansky is speaking in addition to those efforts, then I think it is appropriate to rename the Farmers Market after Cesar Chavez. But if it is to be an alternative to renaming one of those streets, that is not sufficient.

The Dallas City Plan Commission wants to abide by a city-sponsored survey that favored renaming Industrial for Chavez. The city council is scheduled to vote on changing Industrial to Riverfront Boulevard next week.
