The pilots union at American Airlines says there has been “a significant spike” in safety issues at the airline, including fewer routine aircraft inspections and shorter test flights on planes returning from major maintenance work.

The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association's board approved a tentative agreement in December, which more than 92% of participating union members voted to ratify, SWAPA announced Monday.

The agreement would give pilots a 50% pay raise over the next four years, and includes improvements to flying schedules, disability coverage and retirement benefits. The roughly 11,000 unionized pilots for Dallas-based Southwest have until Jan. 22 to vote on the tentative agreement.

A small plane crashed and burned Tuesday on the doorstep of a strip mall in Texas, killing the pilot and causing a nearby car to catch fire, but nobody on the ground was injured, authorities said.

American Airlines flight attendants are asking federal officials for the right to go on strike, possibly before the end of the Christmas and New Year's travel rush, but American said there was “no possibility” of a walkout over the holidays.

Southwest is the only major airline that hasn't reached a deal with its pilots union.
