Just in time for July Fourth, organizations at White Rock Lake in Dallas can return to normal after a sewage spill last week prompted city officials to suspend all water recreation activities.
A burst pipe sent over one million gallons of raw sewage into White Rock Creek. There was concern the sewage could travel to White Rock Lake, but the spill was contained.
City officials gave lake partners the OK to resume activities Monday. The dog park at White Rock Lake will reopen Tuesday.
A construction crew last Wednesday ruptured the pipe near Preston Road and the President George Bush Turnpike, near the border of Plano and Dallas. The pipe was repaired and back in service early Thursday, according to the North Texas Municipal Water District.
The sewage traveled one mile, flowing into White Rock Creek, about 12 miles from where it enters White Rock Lake, before it was repaired.
Drinking water was not affected. White Rock Lake is not a supply of drinking water for the city. And swimming in the lake is prohibited by city ordinance.
Officials from the water district and Trinity Watershed Management conducted environmental assessments and sample water quality along White Rock Creek following the spill.
