The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

The National Rifle Association's annual convention kicks into high gear Friday at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. President Trump and Vice President Pence will both speak at the event, and protesters are mobilizing outside.

Trump, an NRA supporter, temporarily walked away from the group's anti-gun-control mission after the Parkland school shooting in February, which left 17 people dead and spurred a massive national gun control movement, with student activists leading the charge. But today's speech will mark Trump’s fourth straight year to go before the NRA.

Convention attendees will be able to carry firearms at the convention, but per Secret Service rules, guns are not permitted in the forum where Trump will speak.

Other stories this morning:

  • In today's Friday Conversation, KERA’s Rick Holter spoke to people on both sides of the gun debate.  He spoke to Alice Tripp, legislative director of the Texas State Rifle Association, as well as Waed Alhayek, a UT-Arlington student leading Rally 4 Reform – one of the groups that will be protesting the NRA Saturday.

Disclosure: The NRA has provided financial support to KERA.
