Top Stories: Final Harvey Shelter In Dallas Closes; How Binge-Watching Affects Your Health

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: More than a month after Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas coast, the final shelter in Dallas for evacuees closed Sunday.

City officials told the Dallas Morning News those who were staying at the Tommie Allen Recreation Center have either returned home, found an apartment or are staying in local hotels.

About 3,900 people stayed at eight emergency shelters in Dallas, Fort Worth and Irving over five weeks.

  • The Dallas school district last week decided to fast-track renaming four schools honoring Confederate figures, but trustee Joyce Foreman says other schools could be under consideration in the future.
  • The NFL and Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will take the legal fight over his suspension to the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals today. The NFL suspended him for six games over allegations of domestic violence. The NFL Players Association sued on Elliott's behalf.
  • A recent study found 70 percent of U.S. consumers binge-watch TV shows – a trend that raises some health concerns.
