Top Stories: President Trump Nominates Texas Judges; Spotlight On The Texas Gentlemen

The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News:

Two Texans are among President Trump's nominees for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Don Willett is a Texas Supreme Court Justice and James Ho is a Dallas attorney, and both their nominations require U.S. Senate confirmation. The New Orleans appeals court has been an influential stop in recent years for high-profile Texas laws over abortion access, voting rights and immigration crackdowns.

Other stories:

  • The corny dogs are getting ready for a date with the deep fryer, and Big Tex is dusting off his cowboy boots. Yep, the State Fair of Texas opens tomorrow morning. Ever since the fair's first year, back in 1886, food has been a big deal. KERA's Eric Aasen gives us a brief history lesson.

  • About one in 10 people are born left-handed. And while Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama and Bill Gates prove lefties can be widely successful, they've also been viewed as defective by many societies. Howard Kushner is a south paw himself who studies left handedness. Today on Think, he talked with Krys Boyd about the complexities of calculating hand preference.

  • Veteran back-up bands and session players have played a major role in shaping contemporary music. From The Funk Brothers to The Wrecking Crew, they toiled behind the scenes and weren't appreciated for decades. The Texas Gentlemen aren’t so patient. In this week’s Artist Spotlight, Art&Seek’s Hady Mawajdeh talks with the North Texas backing band. Now, they're stepping out front.
