After 40 years of public service, University of North Texas chancellor Lee Jackson will announce his retirement today. In his 15 years as chancellor, Jackson oversaw some major expansions in the UNT system.
His reach also extends beyond education. The Dallas Morning News reports he started out as a junior assistant in the Dallas city manager’s office. His career includes a decade as a state representative and 15 years as a Dallas County judge.
He helped revamp the juvenile justice system and stepped up efforts to address child abuse as Dallas County Judge. He successfully lobbied for the creation of the North Texas Tollway Authority. And his support led to the creation of the Sixth Floor Museum.
Jackson’s contract runs through August. Regents will begin looking for his replacement soon.
