The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News:

At a Dallas City Hall news conference, Mayor Mike Rawlings announced that Catholic Charities Dallas will start canvassing the neighborhood this weekend.

As KERA's Courtney Collins reports, many of the residents are used to paying as little as a few hundred dollars a month in rent, and don’t have a plan for what’s next.

Other stories this afternoon:

  • The Supreme Court today rejected an appeal from Texas in its effort to restore its strict voter identification law. The justices said they will not review a lower court ruling that held the law was discriminatory. That court ordered changes in the law before the November election.

  • For years, Texas was known for leading the nation in executions. Houston Public Media's Andrew Schneider takes a look at a state representative who has made it his mission to stop capital punishment. He's filed bills to that end in every legislative session since 2003.
