The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News: A third of the fire stations in Dallas don’t meet national standards, say Dallas Fire-Rescue officials. Nineteen stations are more than 50 years old, and need a major overhaul just to be code compliant with the city.

Other stories this afternoon:

  • Former Dallas Bishop Kevin Farrell is having a good two months. This month, he took a new job at the Vatican, and on Sunday, Pope Francis named him a cardinal.
  • Tuesday is the last day Texans can register to vote in November. In a presidential election where a border wall and immigration are front and center, the Latino vote is key. This year, a record 27 million Hispanics are eligible to vote, and almost half of them are millennials. As part of NPR's weeklong project “A Nation Engaged,” KERA’s Gus Contreras caught up with some young first-time Latino voters.
