Top Stories: Deadline Looms To Register To Vote; Risks Of Early Menopause

Shelby Knowles/The Texas Tribune

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Tomorrow’s the deadline to register to vote for the Nov. 8 general election.

Texas is one of 19 states that don’t allow citizens to complete their voter registration online, so you have to complete the process in-person.

However, applications are available online, local county elections offices, sub-courthouses, city halls, libraries and post offices. Applications must be postmarked or dropped off at the election office by close of business Tuesday.

More than 14.9 million Texans are registered to vote, but turnout has typically been low. Texas had one of the lowest voter turnouts in this year’s primary. In 2012, less than 50 percent of eligible adults voted. The national rate was 58 percent.

Early voting begins Oct. 24. Still need to register to vote? Here’s how to do it.

Other stories this morning:

  • Friday’s conditional dismissal of a federal lawsuit against Attorney General Ken Paxton doesn’t end his legal troubles. He still faces state criminal charges for securities fraud.
  • Researchers in the Netherlands concluded early menopause may increase risk for cardiovascular disease and death.
