The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News: Five years ago, a 20-year-old woman made international headlines. She was police chief of a small Mexican town caught up in the cartel drug wars. Her story inspired a trilogy of dramas that’ll get their area premiere from the Undermain Theatre.

  Other stories this afternoon:

  • On Friday, dozens of local, state and national experts got together at the fifth annual Dallas Hunger Summit. As KERA’s Stephanie Kuo reports, they agree that solutions to food insecurity have to start from the bottom.
  • Dallas Police Chief David Brown has at least one job lined up after he retires next month. He announced that he's been invited to be commencement speaker at the University of Texas in Austin. He spent three years studying in Austin, and dropped out in the spring of senior year to come home and become a police officer.
