The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Texas and 11 other states today will ask a federal judge in Fort Worth to halt a federal directive that would allow transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms consistent with their chosen gender identity.

The Obama administration says Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination at public schools, extends to transgender students. However, state attorneys argue Title IX is not explicit about gender identity.

Other stories this morning:

  • Amid efforts to build a high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston, there’s also a proposal for one along I-35 from Oklahoma City to the Rio Grande Valley. The state transportation department held a public meeting in Arlington to discuss the prospect yesterday.
  • The UNT Dallas College of Law earlier this week learned it might not get national accreditation from the American Bar Association. School dean Royal Furgeson talked about that recommendation in our Friday Conversation.
  • Nursing is the most common college major among North Texas students seeking a bachelor’s degree. The U.S. Department of Education says more than 11 percent received a degree in registered nursing in 2014. Though business degrees made up about five percent, it’s still one of the most popular majors at North Texas private universities.
