The top local stories this morning from KERA News: A special report on Thursday night's shootings in downtown Dallas. The latest details on what happened when; interviews with witnesses; reaction from residents.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said five officers were killed and 12 were injured. Civilians were among the wounded.

“Police cornered a suspect and brought in a robot to detonate a bomb,” Dallas Police Chief David Brown said. “The explosion killed the suspect. We tried to negotiate for several hours. We had an exchange of gunfire with the suspect. We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was. Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger.”

Witness Randy Biart told KERA: “All of a sudden I heard a pop pop pop outside. ... It looked at the time there was only one shooter.”

Gunshots erupted following a peaceful protest in downtown.
