The top local stories this morning from the KERA Newsroom:

Cities across North Texas will honor the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with parades and service projects.

There will be one MLK parade in Dallas, and that’s been a source of controversy between city officials and some community leaders.

For nearly thirty years, the city had two parades – one put on by the city, the other organized by the traditionally black newspaper the Elite News. The city parade will be the only celebration this year, and one of the organizers says city officials are trying to shut out The People’s Parade.

Other stories this morning:

  • What if Martin Luther King Jr. was running for president today – what would he say in his campaign speech? Eight students from the Dallas school district gave speeches on that question at the annual Gardere Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition.
  • Many people struggle with weight gain. In this edition of Vital Signs, we explore why lack of sleep may have an impact.
