Since September of last year, the North Texas Tollway Authority has been telling toll violators they could land in court if they don’t pay up. Wednesday, a dozen civil lawsuits were filed in Dallas County.
The NTTA’s Michael Rey says the civil suits offer another way to collect overdue tolls.
"We’ve looked at people on the scofflaw list and they have not responded to the posting of the list," Rey said. "They’ve not responded to other entreaties to pay their tolls. So, this is another avenue as we go forward.”
Rey expects more lawsuits. This week’s filing totals more than $500,000 in past due tolls.
Since the NTTA scofflaw list went online last summer, 12,000 people have paid nearly $3 million.
Rey says the NTTA is also asking the legislature to allow it to block the vehicle registration renewal of anyone owing tolls.
