Dallas – At Dallas City Hall Monday, the Postal Regulatory Commission heard from people about plans to cut Saturday mail delivery.

Phil Major, editor of the Wise County Messenger, says elimination of Saturday service would hurt rural and community newspapers that publish on Fridays and "mail" to subscribers.

Major: We spent 283 thousand dollars last year on postage, which includes postage for our weekly total market coverage publication, with 22 thousand circulation.

Major says that's business and money the Postal Service desperately needs.

Eliminating Saturday delivery would save the Postal Service three billion dollars the first year. The National Association of Letter Carriers is against it.

Monday's Postal Regulatory Commission hearing was the third of seven taking place across the country.
