Dallas, TX – In the wake of GM's bankruptcy filing, General Motors is closing 17 plants around the nation. But the Arlington facility is unaffected. KERA's Bill Zeeble has more.
GM plant closures are expected to cost up to 20 thousand workers their jobs. And while some Arlington employees may take a buyout offer, the plant itself will stay open. 2500 workers assemble large SUVs. Local UAW President JR Flores says it's a sad day for GM.
JR Flores, President UAW 276: It's a double edge sword, bitter sweet, that we weren't on the list to be closed. But we have employees, from nearly every facility across the country so they have family and friends in all those facilities that are closing.
Flores acknowledges the company faces tough challenges ahead. It must regain profitability and build fuel efficient cars to meet new government standards.
Flores: It's comforting to know both the UAW and GM worked together in talks with the treasury. Everyone came to the conclusion they could be met.
Arlington's GM plant is closed until July 13th, to help save money.
