TX Mayors Talk Economic Stimulus
By BJ Austin
Dallas, TX – President Obama is hoping to pick up the pace of an economic stimulus package in Congress. He plans a prime time news conference tomorrow night to press his case for action.
Houston's Mayor Bill White says he's concerned about the lag-time once Congress does pass a bill. He says to be effective, the money needs to go straight to LOCAL governments.
White: If people allocated this money to cities, counties, big, small, urban, rural, and told them they had to spend it, we would be held accountable to the public to spend it wisely. And we don't need somebody who has a phd in Washington to tell us what our citizens want.
Mayor White's comments were part of a summit of Texas big-city Mayors in Dallas. They discusses the federal economic stimulus package, was well as their top agenda items for this state Legislative session.
