Ex-Superintendent Of Dallas County School Bus System Sentenced

Associated Press

A former executive of Dallas County's school bus system has become the latest figure to be sentenced as part of a multimillion dollar bribery scandal.

Chief U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn on Wednesday sentenced former Dallas County Schools Superintendent Rick Sorrells to seven years in prison for accepting millions in bribes.

Sorrells told Lynn that greed caused him to make "horrific decisions that affected an entire community."

Sorrells accepted illicit payments from the owner of a Louisiana company, Force Multiplier Solutions, and in exchange the company received $70 million in contracts to provide surveillance cameras for the agency's school buses.

The owner of the company, Robert Leonard, was sentenced in May to seven years. Former Dallas city councilor Dwaine Caraway last year pleaded guilty for his role in the scheme and was sentenced to four years.

County residents voted in 2017 to abolish the agency.
