Top Stories: Dallas Names New Fire Chief; Arlington Has A Temporary Library

The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News: Dallas has a new Fire Chief. David Coatney will lead the Fire Department starting next month. Coatney was in charge of Round Rock’s department for the last five years, and before that served in San Antonio. He also has experience in police and a military background. 

The city of Arlington tore down its main library a couple of years ago. Officials said the Central Library was too outdated. There are several library branches still open, but for now the main library has had to seriously downsize.

Other stories this afternoon:

  • The Supreme Court will hear appeals from two African-American death-row inmates in Texas, including one who argued his sentence was based on his race. The justices today said they will review death sentences for inmates Bobby Moore and Duane Buck. 

  • A Texas judge has dismissed murder charges against a man who previously was convicted and almost executed in the 1977 East Texas slaying of a 21-year-old woman.

  • Donald Trump is heading to Texas next week  to raise some money. The Republican presidential candidate is scheduled to visit Dallas on June 16.
