Top Stories: Rebuilding On A Budget After Disaster; Texas Senate Talks Eminent Domain

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Alfredo and Anthony Fowler-Rainone own their home free and clear and they have insurance. The problem: rebuilding a two-story house in Rowlett costs more than insurance is paying.

State lawmakers are revisiting an ongoing fight between private property rights and the reach of government. A Texas Senate Committee heard testimony on Tuesday about whether to tighten eminent domain laws.

  • The Dallas crime rate is on the rise and some police officers are calling for the resignation of Police Chief David Brown, but the top cop has the support of the city manager. A.C. Gonzalez released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying the crime spike is a learning opportunity to make improvements within the police department. 
  • Dallas author Jonathan Norton has won a national playwriting prize for his civil rights drama, "Mississippi Goddamn." The winner of the Elizabeth Osborn New Play Award is chosen by members of the American Theater Critics Association.
