Top Stories: Women And Guns In Texas; Getting Stuck In Financial Insecurity

Lauren Silverman / KERA News
A pink toolkit for gun maintenance is one of the newer accessories on sale at Ray's Sporting Goods in Dallas, Texas.

The top stories this afternoon from KERA News: There’s a lot of confusion about two new gun laws in Texas – open carry and campus carry. That was clear at a state Senate committee hearing Tuesday in Austin. The panel heard from university officials, law enforcement leaders and activists on both sides of the gun debate.

Few Texans have even seen anyone openly carrying a firearm since the first of the year. As KERA reports, most women are keeping their weapons concealed, and that’s led to a booming gun-fashion industry.

A new “Assets and Opportunities” scorecard from the Corporation for Enterprise Development came out recently. Overall, Texas ranks 41 among the states and the District of Columbia – that’s four slots worse than last year. One key issue: the number of low-paying jobs in Texas.

Other stories this afternoon:

  • Ethan Couch, who’s been labeled the “affluenza teen,” is heading back to Texas. The 18-year-old has been in Mexico since December. Couch’s Mexican lawyer said Tuesday that he’s dropped an appeal to stop deportation. The attorney said Couch could return to Fort Worth by the end of the week.
