Top Stories: Texas Lawmakers To Discuss Gun Laws; Recess In North Texas Schools

Todd Wiseman
Texas Tribune

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: A hearing is underway in Austin on two controversial new gun laws in the state – open carry and campus carry.

Supporters and opponents will update the Texas Senate Affairs panel on how the measures have worked so far and whether Texans clearly understand the new laws.

No major incidents have been reported so far. But local officials remain unclear about some of the law's requirements. For instance, whether police officers can ask those openly carrying guns to present their permits.

Public colleges and universities are still trying to figure out where to allow guns on campus before the campus carry law takes effect in August.

Other stories this morning:

  • The New York Times says Jaap van Zweden is one of two top contenders to become the music director of the New York Philharmonic. A choice could be made as early as this winter.
  • The Dallas school board will vote Thursday on making recess mandatory for all elementary students.
