From The Newsroom: Rockwall Camp Takes In Immigrant Kids; Potatoes Can Be Art, Too

The top local stories this evening from the KERA Newsroom: Another group of unaccompanied children from Central America arrived in Rockwall County over the weekend. The 179 kids, mostly boys ages 12 to 17, are staying at Sabine Creek Ranch, about 35 miles east of Dallas.

It’s the second temporary housing location to open in North Texas this month, joining Lakeview Camp and Retreat Center in Ellis County. The two camps have taken in hundreds of children whom officials say left their homes to flee gang violence and poverty.

Alzheimer’s disease is two to three times more prevalent in women than men. Dr. Sonny Singh, who studies the disease at UNT Health Science Center, told guest host Lauren Silverman that researchers are trying to figure out why.

This time of year, the mail brings us wrapped boxes and holiday cheer. Jed Morse, chief curator at the Nasher Sculpture Center, received his elaborately packaged item last week. As KERA’s Jerome Weeks reports, he wasn’t surprised. He wasn’t even surprised when inside that package -- he found a single potato.
