Dallas Mavericks CEO says there's no project related to City Hall site

FILE - In this Jan. 5, 2010, file photo, the Dallas Mavericks logo is shown during an NBA basketball game against the Detroit Pistons in Dallas. The Dallas Mavericks have hired outside counsel to investigate allegations of inappropriate conduct by former team president Terdema Ussery in a Sports Illustrated report that described a hostile workplace for women. Ussery was accused of making sexually suggestive remarks to several women. He spent 18 years with the team before going to the sports apparel company Under Armour in 2015. Ussery, who was investigated by the team over similar claims in 1998, denied the allegations in a statement to SI. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez, File)

The comments from Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts follow months of speculation from residents and council members that the team is interested in the City Hall property.

The Dallas Mavericks say there are no plans in place to take over the City Hall site.

Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts told the Dallas Morning News there was "no project to talk about until the city would signal to us that there’s something to talk about."

A Dallas Mavericks spokesperson confirmed the comments to KERA on Tuesday.

The comments come after months of speculation from residents and city council members that the team is interested in the City Hall property for its future arena.

The team came up several times during the two hours of public comment at Monday's Economic Development Committee meeting.

But Assistant City Manager Robin Bentley told council members that, while the Mavericks have been eyeing downtown, the city has has not heard anything from the team.

"Not a dollar of incentive goes out that I do not know about and I can tell you — I hope I have some credibility with all of you because I try to be a plain talker and a fair dealer — there's no deal, there's no term sheet," Bentley told council members.
