Shellie Ross of Wesley Rankin Community Center (right, holding "Reach for the STAARS" sign) takes part in a pep rally to welcome students at Edison Middle Learning Center on STAAR testing day.

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Preliminary results are out from this spring's STAAR tests. According to The Dallas Morning News, fifth- and eighth-graders in Texas made improvements at every performance level in the math section.

However, reading results were mixed. While fifth-graders made improvements, eighth-grade scores were flat. Fifth- and eighth-grade students must pass the reading and math tests to be automatically promoted to the next grade. Those who failed get two more chances on the tests.
