Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas and an ally of President Donald Trump, has written a column for the Fox News website acknowledging president-elect Joe Biden as having won the White House.
In the opinion piece, Jeffress called Biden’s victory a “bitter pill to swallow,” but later refers to a Biblical passage in which the Apostle Paul said “let every person be subject to the governing authorities.”
Later in the essay, Jeffress wrote “here is our chance to show that Christians are not hypocrites.”
Jeffress has been a supporter of President Trump since before he won the presidency in 2016. He told NPR that year he was motivated by Trump’s policy agenda and promise to appoint conservative judges.
Jeffress’ TV and radio shows air on hundreds of stations nationwide.
Meanwhile, several prominent statewide elected Republicans in Texas have chosen not to congratulate Biden on winning. The strategy allows President Trump to throw unfounded doubt on the election and keep GOP voters in Georgia motivated to turn out for two Senate runoff elections in January.
