North Texas has kicke off 2019 with cold air, rain and, in some counties, icy roads.
National Weather Service forecasts a mix of winter precipitation, including sleet and freezing rain, across the region through early Thursday.
Some areas in Dallas-Fort Worth saw freezing rain Wednesday morning. The NWS says it's received multiple reports of icy roads across parts of the region.
» Western counties are at the highest risk of slick roads. A winter storm watch has been issued for a swath of territory west of Tarrant County, from Decatur to Stephenville and out to Abilene.
» Central counties — think Sherman, Denton, Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco — likely will only see accumulation on elevated surfaces, like bridges.
» Eastern North Texas will get a helping of cold rain, but temps will stay above freezing. The east is at lowest risk for travel problems.
The Texas Department of Transportation has pre-treated main lanes, bridges and overpasses across several North Texas counties. Maintenance crews use brine — a saltwater mix — to keep ice from forming on road surfaces.
New Year's Eve's low reached into the 30s, with wind chill in the 20s. Bundle up.
