The top local stories this morning from KERA News: The Texas National Guard deployed hundreds of troops to the Texas-Mexico border over the weekend. Gov. Greg Abbott praised President Trump's order in an appearance this morning on Fox & Friends.
He said past increases in manpower reduced activity from drug cartels and traffickers.
The Texas Tribune reports apprehensions or denial of entry along the border last month increased by about 13,000 people from March of last year. U.S. Customs and Border Protection however says apprehensions in the last six months fell by about 34,000 from the same period last fiscal year.
President Trump's call to send more National Guard members to the border isn't unusual. President George W. Bush sent about 6,000 in 2006. President Barack Obama sent 1,200 in 2010.
