Top Stories: Flu Forces School Closures; Cold Temperatures Break A Record

The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

The flu outbreak has forced the Bonham school district to cancel classes for the week because too many teachers and students are sick.

John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth is also opening extra clinics to help fight the illness. Hospitals across Texas are feeling the strain from the high volume of flu cases. So far, 35 people have died from the illness in North Texas this season.

  • The number of immigrants who die in detention centers nationwide reached an eight-year high last year.
  • New research out of North Texas is beginning to map out how football effects the brains of kids.
  • The coldest place in North Texas this morning was Eastland Municipal Airport; it was a record -2 degrees there. The National Weather Service says that’s the coldest temperature recorded in North Texas in 28 years.
