Top Stories: Abbott, Dallas Lawmaker To Meet About Confederate Monuments At The Capitol

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Governor Greg Abbott and Texas House Rep. Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) will meet this afternoon in Dallas to discuss Confederate monuments on Capitol grounds.

Johnson wants a plaque outside his Capitol office removed. It asserts the Civil War was “not a rebellion, nor was its underlying cause to sustain slavery.” Abbott has previously said removing monuments won't erase the past.

Other stories this morning:

  • As many as 35 homeless students in Dallas will have a safe place to stay by next year. The Dallas school board last night said yes turning a now-closed school into a permanent shelter for homeless high schoolers.
  • Earlier this month, the Dallas City Council had a briefing on a futuristic mode of transportation in development. The Hyperloop promises to shuttle people in capsules from Dallas to Austin in 19 minutes. We talk to the urban designer behind a proposed Texas route in our Friday Conversation.
