Harvey, the hawk who survived the hurricane by the same name, will be released in Plano today after rehabilitation.

Five stories that have North Texas talking: Harvey the Hurricane Hawk to fly free in Plano; Grapevine cyclist makes cross-country ride for cancer research; check out the Rangers 2018 schedule; and more.

Among the many animals rescued throughout Hurricane Harvey’s stay in Texas was a frightened hawk that wouldn’t leave William Bruso’s taxicab. A video of this unlikely scene went viral.

Bruso cared for the Cooper’s hawk, appropriately named Harvey, until a member of the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition transferred him to the professional facility. According to NPR, the rehab center’s staff “believe he wouldn't have survived the storm without rescue.”

The Houston-based rehab center contacted the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center in Lucas, Texas in Collin County to help with Harvey’s final steps before release.

Harvey will be released at 1 p.m. at Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve in Plano. Harvey’s being released far from home “as TWRC felt releasing Harvey into damaged habitats in the Houston area would not be in the best interest of the hawk’s survival,” according to the City of Plano.

The release will take place in the south parking lot of Oak Point Amphitheater, located at 2801 E. Spring Creek Parkway. [KERA News]
