Gov. Abbott announces he's running for reelection, on July 14, 2017.

The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

Governor Greg Abbott has formally launched his bid for reelection. He made the announcement in San Antonio, not far from where he launched his first bid for the state’s highest office four years ago. Abbott said he's running to "keep Texas the very best state in the United States."

Other stories this evening:

  • Governor Abbott's announcement comes just days before the Texas Legislative special session. Several items on the agenda address the role that local and state government should play in people's lives. It's called "local control." As Andrew Schneider with Houston Public Media reports, "local control" is sparking a heated debate among politicians across the state.

  • The legend of Robin Hood is getting a musical reboot from the Dallas Theater Center, and the production has dreams of reaching Broadway. For this week's "State of the Arts" conversation, our Art&Seek team: Anne Bothwell, Jerome Weeks and Hady Mawajdeh sit down to hash out "Hood's" chances.
