A federal judge in San Antonio this morning will hear arguments for putting the state’s new sanctuary cities ban on hold while the court considers whether the law violates the U.S. Constitution.
Dallas is among the major Texas cities challenging Senate Bill 4. It would punish cities and law enforcement officials who do not comply with federal immigration detainers.
The U.S. Justice Department Friday filed a statement of interest, arguing the bill is constitutional and valid. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also filed a pre-emptive lawsuit when the SB 4 was signed, asking a federal court to declare it constitutional.
A court in Austin will consider Paxton's request Thursday.
