Top Stories: The Factors Behind Texas’ High Teen Pregnancy Rate


The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

The number of teen pregnancies in the U.S. has hit a record low. But that doesn’t include certain parts of Texas. The Dallas and San Antonio areas have rates 50 and 40 percent above the national average.

Every year in Texas, about 35,000young women get pregnant before their 20th birthday. Traditionally, the two variables most commonly associated with high teen birth rates are education and poverty, but a new study shows those aren’t the only factors at play.
