The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

A Texas House committee today is expected to take up a bill targeting so-called “sanctuary cities.” Senate Bill 4, which was approved in the Senate last month, would punish local and state governments that don't cooperate with federal officials to enforce immigration laws.

Supporters say the bill would keep law enforcement agencies consistent in following the same procedures. Opponents say the bill would cause fear in immigrant communities, and ultimately discourage cooperation with law enforcement.

Other stories this morning:

  • The final stamp of approval for the so-called “bathroom bill” could come as early as today in the Texas Senate.
  • Baylor Scott & White Health last month began giving free diabetic shoes to its uninsured, low-income patients to fight what doctors see as a diabetes crisis in North Texas. It’s part of a larger program to give medical surplus to the needy.
