Former President George H.W. Bush was discharged Monday from Houston Methodist Hospital where he had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia for more than two weeks.

Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement Monday that the 92-year-old Bush is thankful for the prayers and kind messages he's received during his stay at the hospital and for the "world-class care" from doctors and nurses.

Bush was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 14 for shortness of breath. During his treatment, which included a stay in intensive care, doctors inserted a breathing tube and connected him to a ventilator.

Former first lady Barbara Bush, 91, was admitted to the hospital just a matter of days after her husband checked in. She had been experiencing fatigue and coughing.

She left the hospital on Jan. 23 after undergoing treatment for bronchitis. McGrath said doctors allowed Bush to go home the day before, but she opted to stay that Sunday night to fully recover and to stay close to her husband.

The Bushes have been married for more than seven decades — the longest marriage of any presidential couple in American history.
