The top local stories this morning from KERA News:
The Texas African American History Memorial was unveiled at the State Capitol this weekend. The monument depicts Juneteenth – June 19, 1865 – when hundreds of Union troops arrived in Texas and announced the freedom of slaves in the U.S.
The structure also portrays the role of black Texans in advancing some of the state’s major industries.
Officials such as Governor Greg Abbott and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner attended the unveiling ceremony.
Near the end though, white nationalists could be heard chanting down the street. They were eventually surrounded by hundreds of counter-protesters. State troopers in riot gear separated the dueling protests. White nationalist group organizers told the Texas Tribune the timing of their protest was a coincidence.
