The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

With less than a month before the general election, a new poll shows Democrat Hillary Clinton is closing in on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in Texas.

Though Trump is still ahead, the WFAA-SurveyUSA poll shows he’s beating Clinton 47 percent to 43 percent. That’s a close margin in a solidly Republican state.

The last Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, won Texas by 16 points. John McCain carried the state by 12 points in 2008. Trump’s poll numbers have been sliding across the country following last week’s release of a 2005 clip showing him speaking lewdly about women.

Other stories this morning:

  • High interest in the 2016 presidential election may have contributed to a spike in registered voters. State officials yesterday announced Texas has set a new record for statewide registered voters.
  • Union Station in downtown Dallas turns 100 on Monday. Though it’s underused currently, the station was once the transportation center of the Southwest.
