Top Stories: Clean Power Plan Heads To Court Today

Texas Tribune

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Texas and 27 other states today will challenge the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan in court. The regulations call for states to slash carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and shift away from coal power to renewable resources.

Texas – the nation’s biggest carbon dioxide emitter – would have to cut an annual average of 51 million tons of emissions.

State Attorney General Ken Paxton argues the plan would cost the state jobs, push electricity costs too high and subvert state power.

Today’s oral arguments will mostly focus on whether the Clean Air Act allows the EPA to regulate carbon dioxide in the way it has attempted.

The U.S. Supreme Court in February granted a request to halt the Clean Power Plan as the case winds through the legal system.
