Top Stories: As Dallas City Manager, What Impact Did A.C. Gonzalez Leave?

KERA News

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: After nearly three years on the job, Dallas City Manager A.C. Gonzalez has announced his resignation, effective in January.

Gonzalez has spent two decades with the city, mostly as Assistant City Manager. He helped develop the Omni Convention Center Hotel, modernize Love Field, and brought the Stars to Dallas. However, most of those achievements happened before Gonzalez became city manager in 2014 – one of the highest-paid in the country.

Reporter Tristan Hallman with the Dallas Morning News said he had lukewarm support among the city council.

He never really won them over by making the substantial changes that he had promised,” said Hallman.  “Although he does say he made the government better while he was there, and he was more of a systems guy in that way, [the council wanted] a bold leader.”

Gonzalez told the Morning News his resignation was a way to “get his life back.”

However Hallman says other issues may have been at play, including a recent city audit pointing to a lack of policies to prevent waste and abuse. His exit in January gives Gonzalez time to finish a city budget for the upcoming fiscal year and to prepare Dallas for the upcoming legislative agenda.
