Top Stories: Historical Racing On The Table Again; The World Of High School Debate

Richard W. Rodriguez/The Fort Worth Star-Telegram

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: The Texas Racing Commission today will again take up the issue of historical racing. Members have to decide whether to amend or repeal rules for replaying already-run races on slot-machine style devices at Texas tracks.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegramreports key funding for the commission runs out at the end of the month. And state officials have indicated they won’t approve more money if historical racing still exists.

That decision could mean a shutdown of the racing commission and a stop to racing at horse tracks like Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie as soon as next week.

Other stories this morning:

  • About 100 people held a candlelight vigil in front of the home of Baylor University president Kenneth Starr last night. The group protested the school’s response to campus sexual violence.
  • KERA will host special coverage of the New Hampshire primary tonight beginning at 7. Though eyes are on the Granite State tonight for the nation’s first primary, presidential candidates – and political experts - have their eyes on March 1, when Texas and 13 other states hold their primaries and caucuses.
  • Debaters from the U.S. and abroad traveled to Dallas last week for the annual Old Parkland debates. Bill Zeeble followed one high school team through the competition.
