More than 1,000 homes were damaged from this weekend's tornadoes.

The top local stories this morning from the KERA Newsroom: Neighborhoods in Garland and Rowlett took some of the biggest punches from Saturday’s tornadoes. KERA's Bill Zeeble talked to some people yesterday who lived through the storms.

Other stories this morning:

  • Tornadoes in December is unusual, but it happens; about once every three to five years, according to Ted Ryan with the National Weather Service. Ryan also says El Nino had a helping hand in setting up this weekend’s storms. Luckily, the weather should calm down later this week.
  • This edition of Vital Signsbrings some good news for coffee drinkers. A Harvard study published in the journal Circulation found people who drink three to five cups a day are less likely to die from a range of diseases, from diabetes to heart disease.
