Airlines Waiving Fees To Re-book Flights Canceled By Hurricane Sandy

National Weather Service

The "superstorm" Sandy may be hundreds of miles away but it’s still affecting air travel in and out of North Texas.

DFW International Airport's biggest carrier, American Airlines,  says it has suspended operations in nine Eastern seaboard cities in the path of Hurricane Sandy. That's led to more than 1,500 canceled flights through Wednesday, including some in and out of DFW.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines and its subsidiary, AirTran, said they canceled mored than 1,700 flights.

All those airlines are allowing customers to rebook for free under certain conditions.

American spokesman Matt Miller says if you’re one of the ticket holders whose flight was canceled, you must:

* Have a ticket bought no later than Oct. 26 with travel scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28, through Wednesday, Oct. 31.

* Travel before Nov. 7.

American recommends you rebook your flight by phone instead of online.  The reservation number for doing that is (800) 433-7300.

Southwest is urging its customers to call  (800) 435-9792.
